AMA National Hare and Hound Series

The AMA National Hare and Hound Series consists of desert races in California, Nevada, Utah, and Idaho. I found this series when I was racing in Baja and I was looking for other desert races to do so I could stay sharp for Mexico. The NHHA events are a series of loops that can vary from 40 to 120 miles, and contain tight rocky sections, wide open dry lake sections, and everything in between.

The start of a NHHA race takes place in an open area called the Bomb Run. The racers line up in rows for each class. There is a truck parked a 100 yards down the start straight with two guys holding a big banner in the air. When the banner drops forward everyone starts their bikes and hauls ass down the start straight, which can be 1/2 mile to 2 miles long. It is all about going as fast as possible to get to where the track funnels down into a single trail, because the first one there will have no dust to deal with. The rows are usually started 15 minutes apart to help with the dust factor. The bomb run is the only section of the track that the racers can prerun, and it is only open for practice for a few hours.

In 2012 we were racing in Lucerne Valley and someone had a radar gun set up on a dry lake bed section of the course. Someone was putting up $100 to the fastest machine through the speed trap. Kurt Caselli won it on his Factory KTM 450 at 107mph. Not all of the course is wide open though, and there was a race that I was riding on a quad and we went into a boulder field at the base of a hill. The course went up the hill through the boulders, and at one point I got my front wheels through two big ass rocks but my rear axle was just a little TOO wide. I gassed it and the tires spun up the rocks and popped through as the gap got wider. I looked back and there were black rubber marks on the rocks!
